As seen before this first scene represents the turning point in our hero's life. The couple crisis is the key element of his depression and his future.

The scene takes place in a cold snowy night. Mort is talking to himself, as a voice over. It is shown as a normal thing. At first this seem to be a detail but when we continue the movie we can actually see him talking to himself. The voice and his representation in the movie shows us that he is loosing his mind. The cheating scene is an external crisis, fact that is going to lead to another crisis.

Mort can't support that his wife is cheating on him and to show this the character grabs his own head as a refusal. He can't handle the situation and just run from the motel room, he turns his back to the problem. In a scene we can see him dreaming about killing his ex wife and her lover with a gun when he catched them in the motel.

We can see that even in his dream, he can't kill his wife, Mort is not a killer. That is why he is going to be someone else, and that he is going develop an other personality. For a reality too harch for him he needed someone strong and not limited by morality.

The six month's ellipse and the general physical aspect of Mort shows us that he has not moved on. He keeps some bitterness that is consuming his mental.
