The movie opens on a scene where Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp) catches his wife cheating on him in a motel with an other man. This is the turning point in his life, the event that destroyed his life and his mental health. The rest of the story follows our hero, 6 month later, living alone in a country house. Alone and depressed, life become meaningless for him.

He is engaged in a divorce procedure when a man pretending that Mort stole one of his stories, appears. The writer must find a proof that this can't be true. The only way is to find the original of his text and to get this document he has to see his wife wich is the person who was dealing with his work before the cheating. This man named Shooter is Mort's alter.

He developped a Dissociative Identity Disorder which pushed him to do what he can't do as Mort. Asking for the original of his book is just a way to contact his wife, a way to be close to his soon to be victim.
